Japan Equipment Certification
What is JPEx?
JPEx is Japan’s mandatory certification scheme for explosion-protected electrical equipment used or installed in hazardous locations. A valid JPEx Type Examination Certificate issued by a JPEx certification body (Registered Type Examination Agency under Japan’s MHLW) is required to legally place and use such equipment in Japan. Overseas approvals such as ATEX or IECEx do not substitute for JPEx under Japanese law.
Type Examination (JPEx) — how it works
Under the Japanese type-examination system, a Registered Type Examination Agency assesses the product against Japan’s technical requirements (closely harmonized with the IEC 60079 series) and issues a JPEx Type Examination Certificate when compliant. To streamline the process, Japan permits the use of IECEx ExTRs as part of the application dossier, while confirming conformity with the Japanese technical basis.
